About the Yoro and Santa Barbara Deforested Lands ReLeaf Project:

American Forests and Fundación Cosecha Sostenible de Honduras (FUCOHSO), an affiliate of Sustainable Harvest International (SHI), are planting 30,000 trees across 180 acres of degraded agricultural land.

Global ReLeaf provides forests like this — and the communities that depend on them — with the restoration they need to thrive. Since 1990, American Forests has brought ReLeaf to forests in all 50 states and 45 countries, planting more than 45 million trees in the process.

ReLeaf Location:

Yoro and Santa Barbara, Honduras

Key ReLeaf Activities:

  • Planting 30,000 trees across 180 acres
  • Restoring lands degraded by unsustainable agricultural practices
  • Restoring a riparian ecosystem
  • Restoring habitat for wildlife

Why This ReLeaf Project?

Traditional agricultural practices and livestock grazing in Honduras have left forests cut down and topsoil depleted. This project is converting lands degraded by agriculture into biologically rich lands, providing habitat for wildlife while generating income for local families.

Why Sustainable Agriculture?

Farming techniques such as slash-and-burn farming severely degrade the land, causing soil erosion, drought and biodiversity loss. This project is not only mitigating this problem by planting trees, but also providing training to subsistence farmers on sustainable farming practices that ensure food security while using natural resources efficiently and not degrading the land. Trees decrease soil erosion and increase the fertility of the land, helping farmers practice more sustainable agriculture and increasing the economic and environmental security of the region.
