The region of southeast Alaska is experiencing accelerated mortality of yellow-cedar trees due to the phenomenon of yellow-cedar decline. Yellow-cedar decline is thought to be caused by a combination of factors including warming air and soil temperatures and low snow packs, all thought to be associated with a warming climate. The purpose of this project is to plant 8,000 seedlings of yellow-cedar grown from 16 different seed lots over 15 acres of land in the Tongass National Forest. These 16 different seed lots were used to develop genetically varied yellow-cedars to see which ones are best adapted to regenerate successfully in Southeast Alaska.
