Whitebark Pine Planting in Willow Burned Area

Year Planted: 2010
Trees Planted: 19,000
Location: Idaho

This planting project in the Caribou/Targhee National Forest aims to replenish the forests number of whitebark pine trees. The whitebark pine has been in decline in this forest, as in many others. The white pine blister rust, mountain pine beetle infestations, fires, and altered climate conditions have taken their toll on the whitebark pines in this National Forest. 15,000 whitebark pines will be planted over 120 acres in hope of reversing the decline of this keystone species for the local habitat. The tree provides an important food source for many local animals, and further decline of the Whitebark pine could lead to the collapse of the local food web.
