A lightning strike in 2006 started the Warm Fire, which burned over 39,000 acres. American Forests’ partners, Kaibab National Forest, will plant ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir over 1,600 acres to reestablish native conifers and create a seed source for natural regeneration. The conifers will also help establish habitat for the northern goshawk and its prey species.
