In April 1990, a severe forest fire burned approximately 10,000 acres of land in Pennsylvania. The Sproul State Forest, part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, was affected by the burn. In 2000 volunteers planted 7,500 black cherry and white oak. Tree shelters were also installed for protection from deer. Benefits of this project include the reforestation of fire area, increased wildlife habitat, regeneration of species of commercial value and improvement of the local aesthetics. Partners in this project included DCNR Bureau of Forestry, Penn ReLeaf, Hardwood Plywood and Veneer Association and the Pennsylvania Forestry Association.
