The Sproul State Forest, part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, was affecte… Read More Year Planted: 1998 In April 1990, a severe forest fire burned approximately 10,000 acres of land in Pennsylvania. The Sproul State Forest, part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, was affected by the burn. In 1998 13,545 trees were planted to restore part of the damaged area. New genetically improved stock was planted and tree shelters were installed on the red oak trees for protection from deer. Volunteers assisted with the planting, including Bucktail High School, Lock Haven High School, Lock Haven University and Penn ReLeaf. Partners in this project included Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry, Hardwood Plywood and Veneer Association, Walnut Acres of Penns Creek, Sproul Forest District and the Pennsylvania Forestry Association.
