In April 1990, a severe forest fire burned approximately 10,000 acres of land in Pennsylvania. The Sproul State Forest, part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, was affected by the burn. In 1993 volunteers planted 1,000 red oak, white ash and black cherry seedlings on 9 acres. Tree shelters were also installed for protection from deer. Benefits of this project include the reforestation of fire area, production of high quality timber products, an increase in biodiversity and mast crop production for wildlife. Partners in this project included the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry, Penn ReLeaf, Hardwood Plywood and Veneer Association, Walnut Acres of Penns Creek, Sproul Forest District and the Pennsylvania Forestry Association.
