Trees Planted: 13,474
Location: Bosnia and Herzegovina

In the build up to the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City and coming on the heels on two successful tree plantings, the Secretary General of the Olympic Committee for Bosnia i Herzegovina and US Ambassador to Sarajevo Thomas Miller, along with participants of the 1984 Olympic games in Sarajevo, joined to plant trees in the war-ravaged city of Sarajevo. They wanted to raise awareness for the growing problems deforestation has caused the increase of landslides, the heat island effect and the barrenness of the city after the deforestation caused by the conflicts of the mid-1990s. Along with American Forests and Park Sarajevo, local citizens and American supporters planted thousands of trees on the most at risks sites for landslides. In addition, urban locations were selected including hospitals, schools, cemeteries, and the Jewish Museum. The Mayor of Sarajevo vowed to continue forestation projects and agreed to hire an ecologist to ensure tree survival.
