Trees Planted: 3,200
Location: Bosnia and Herzegovina

US Ambassador to Sarajevo Thomas Miller witnessed the destruction caused by the conflict of the mid 1990s in the city of Sarajevo and was moved to act. The war left the city devoid of trees, caused directly by the violence of the fighting and the ensuing poverty that drove Bosnians to cut trees for cooking and to heat their homes. Working with Bosnians and with American organizations including USAID and American Forests, a long term plan to plant 300,000 trees on the fragile slopes and 3,000 trees in urban centers began with the planting of 3,200 trees in 1999. Local partners included the Office of the Mayor, Park Sarajevo and Sarajevo Sume. Plantings were completed by these groups and local citizens.
