Three Mile Lake

Year Planted: 1994

Trees Planted: 18,000
Location: Iowa

This project, in cooperation with the Iowa DNR and various regional organizations, established 26 acres of native hardwoods and shrubs as a filter strip on highly erodible ground that surrounds Three Mile Lake, which was a proposed reservior. This land has a past history of overgrazing and poor agricultural cropping. Trees were planted on this land for a variety of reasons, including the reduction of potential soil erosion and lake sedimentaion, the improvement of the natural filtration system, the improvement of water quality for human consumption and recreational use, and to increase the diversity of wildlife habitat. In the years since the planting the reservior has been completed. Three Mile Lake is now a major recreational site, a source a rural water for human consumption, and an educational site. There has also been a noticeable increase in the wildlife population.
