Telephone Canyon Fire Restoration

Year Planted: 2001
Trees Planted: 123,582
Location: New Mexico

The Telephone Canyon area of the Mescalero Apache Tribe reservation experienced high-intensity fires during the spring of 1999. The area will be reestablished for watershed stabilization, wildlife habitat, scenic and recreational values and timber production. The Telephone Canyon area is contained within the larger Tularosa Basin watershed, which was also impacted by the 1996 Chino Well Fire. The reforestation of this area will improve water quality in the watershed as a whole. American Forests’ funding was combined with other funding sources to make this project possible.
