The result is a high level of biodiversity in both plants and animals. However, the region is suffering from deforestation caused by over-harvesting that compounds existing environmental problems – rain, drought, and fires. Working with the local group Grupo Ecologico Sierra Gorda IAP, American Forests was able to help plant 75,000 trees as part of a larger reforestation project. In additional tree planting, education on forest stewardship was provided to community members to ensure they care for the forests and are able to benefit from them in return.
