Name of Project: Shotgun Kirtland’s Warbler Habitat Planting

Number of Trees to be Planted: 82,000

Direct beneficiaries: Kirtland’s Warbler

Location: Michigan

Year: 2011

Goals

  • Replenish 112 acres of Jack pine forest
  • Regenerate habitat for the Kirtland’s Warbler

Notable Highlights

This planting is part of the recovery management plan for Kirtland’s Warbler in Hiawatha National Forest. Kirtland’s Warbler is an endangered bird species that breeds in Jack pine stands 6-16 years of age, greater than 80 acres in size. Suitable habitat for Kirtland’s Warblers requires at least 1,089 trees per acre with scattered small openings.  Due to these requirements, Kirtland’s Warbler habitat is transitory.

The project aims to plant 112 acres of dense Jack pine stands for Kirtland’s Warbler habitat within Shotgun Salvage Timber Sale. Approximately 750 trees per acre will be planted to bring the overall density of planted and natural seedlings to 1089 trees per acre.
