Schoolcraft Windstorm Restoration

In 1997 and 1998 strong windstorms devastated two separate red pine tree plantations in Schoolcraft County, Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Once the areas were cleared of the debris, 287,000 red pine trees were planted to restore the damaged sites. Benefits of the project include soil stability, decreased erosion, providing wildlife habitat, adding ecological diversity to the standing oaks, reducing the blowing and drifting snow problem on the highway and enhancing aesthetics. American Forests worked with Michigan’s DNR Forest Management and Wildlife Divisions to make this project a reality.
