Name of Project: Re-Green Springfield

Location: Springfield, MA

Number of Trees: 3,000

The urban forest of Springfield, Massachusetts was victim to two devastating natural disasters in 2011: a June tornado and an October snowstorm. On October 24, 2011, the Re-Green Springfield Initiative was launched to rehabilitate the affected forest. Re-Green and American Forests are joining together to plant 3,000 native trees across 4.5 urban acres along recreational trails throughout the city. A major goal of this project is to clear any unstable trees that are blocking accessibility to trails and then plant healthy saplings to replace them. Along with the plantings, residents will be educated about the key role the trees will play in the overall well-being of the city.
