Year Planted: 2003

Trees Planted: 24,860
Location: Brazil

Brazil’s Atlantic Forests need protection and recovery in order to reduce the damage created by agricultural and ranching activities. To meet this need, in 2002 and 2003 Pro-Natura planted 24,860 trees on 30 acres of land in the Rio de Janeiro state. A total of 40 different tree species were planted, including native and fruit bearing trees. The trees were planted on three separate sites. The first site was the Sao Domingos agrarian reform settlement, where a number of families live. Trees were planted on steep slopes to prevent erosion and on rocky outcrops. Another site was the Carrapeta Farm Hotel, where there is an effort to reconnect forest fragments on the property. At the Hotel trees were planted as an educational activities for local students. Finally, planting occurred at Amorosa Falls, an area traditionally used for cattle ranching. Trees were planted on the steep slopes of the Falls to protect water resources. ExxonMobil was a sponsored for this project.
