Pine Creek Riparian

Year Planted: 1995

Trees Planted: 2,800
Location: Idaho

The Bureau of Land Management planted 3,000 black elderberry, quaking aspen, serviceberry and Wood’s rose on the Pine Creek watershed in Shoshone County, east of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The forest riparian zone had been stripped away by mechanical means in 1991. The goal of the project was to improve aquatic and riparian habitats for fish and neo-tropical migratory birds. Survival rates were poor, mainly because the riparian zone had been so abused that it was a bad site to plant without reconstructive surgery. BLM botanists and hydrologists later tried different techniques with better success on other areas along Pine Creek.
