Pillsbury State Forest

Year Planted: 1994

Trees Planted: 12,600
Location: Minnesota

The acreage of the once dominant and majestic white pine in the Lake States has been in serious decline for decades. In particular, this site in the Pillsbury State Forest had paper birch that was in major decline as the overstory and a heavy hazel brush understory. This project eliminated the competing understory and underplanted 12,600 white pine trees in an effort to re-establish the white pine component of the forest ecosystem. This planting will promote forest conversion back to an ecosystem similar to that found in Pillsbury State Forest at the turn of the century. Additionally, this project will increase the bio-diversity of the forest as well as create future nesting habitat for bald eagles. American Forests partnered with the Minnesota DNR Forestry Division, Minnesota Youth Conservation Corps, Pillsbury State Forest and Future Forest Fund to complete this planting.
