Trees Planted: 190,000
Location: Florida

In Florida, the St. Johns Water Management District planted 190,000 longleaf pine seedlings on 314 acres of the original sandhill community in the Ocklawaha Prairie Conservation Area. The area consists of a wet prairie/marsh mix, a converted muck farm that once grew watermelons. The District wants to restore these rare sandhill communities with a ecosystem management approach, by controlling dog fennel and bahai grass, and by planting longleaf pine and wire-grass, and by judicious use of prescribed fire.
