The monarch is threatened by the deforestation of its over wintering habitat in oyamel fir forests. Reforesting these sites will improve the butterflys nesting habitat and restore soil and watersheds in the deforested areas. In addition, because the program creates alternative sites for wood extraction, it will also alleviate future pressure on monarch habitats.
