The mona… Read More Year Planted: 2006 The planting of some 150,000 trees in south-central Mexico was part of a multi-year program to improve winter nesting sites for the endangered monarch butterfly. The monarch is threatened by the deforestation of its over wintering habitat in oyamel fir forests. Reforesting these sites will improve the butterflys nesting habitat and restore soil and watersheds in the deforested areas. In addition, because the program creates alternative sites for wood extraction, it will also alleviate future pressure on monarch habitats.
