Michaux State Forest- Sandy Ridge

Year Planted: 1995

Trees Planted: 2,800
Location: Pennsylvania

In the Michaux State Forest, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry planted 2,800 trees on a site heavily damaged by a wind/ice storm in 1993. In that storm some areas experience 100% blowdown. Reforestation occurred where natural regeneration of tree seedlings was inadequate to produce a desirable stand of trees. Tree shelters were used to protect trees from deer and rodents. Additionally, tree shelters also provide some drought protection as the shelter serves as a miniature greenhouse. The red oak planted will be good for timber production and wildlife and the high value oak, hickory and walnut were planted to enhance biodiversity. Tree seeds collected from standing trees at Michaux State Forest and were planted by PA Conservation Corp. The Hardwood Plywood and Veneer Association also provided funding for this project.
