The last big expanse of South Florida slash pine in southeastern Dade County was devastated by Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Insects and invasive species have created additional problems, and control of the native and exotic competitive vegetation is also a major concern. The potential for planting is half a million seedlings on about 1,000 acres. This project was a collaboration between the Florida Division of Forestry and DERM-Dade County, and in its final stage 12,446 slash pine seedlings were planted in August and September of 1997.
