Trees Planted: 9,000
Location: Florida

The last big expanse of South Florida slash pine in southeastern Dade County was devastated by Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Insects and invasive species have created additional problems. The potential for planting is half a million seedlings on about 1,000 acres. Due to the scarcity of cones, collection was done using a bucket truck, resulting in enough seed for over 8,000 trees planted in the fall of 1994. Trees showed good survival, and in the fall of 1995 an additional acre was planted, bringing the total up to 9,000 over two years. Volunteers and schoolchildren from the Whispering Pines neighborhood participated in the planting. The project was a collaboration between the Florida Division of Forestry and DERM-Dade County.
