Long Island Central Pine Barrens Reserve

Year Planted: 2000

Trees Planted: 9,000
Location: New York

In 2000 American Forests partnered with the Long Island Greenbelt Trails Conference, an organization which coordinates volunteers to maintain hiking trails and protect Long Island’s open spaces. In the Long Island Central Pine Barrens there is a high threat of wildfire and bulldozers are frequently used for wildfire control. However, the sandy soil does not promote natural regeneration of trees if damage occurs. Greenbelt developed a successful planting technique in which trees are planted and then separated off by downed tree limbs. This project planted 9,000 pitch pine trees in the Long Island Central Pine Barrens. Benefits of this project include educational opportunities and improved recreation and watershed qualities.
