Colville National Forest in northeast Washington is known for its 1.1 million acres of rolling hills and diverse forest. Unfortunately, this forest is also home to 5,000 miles of forest roads, which are built to connect the national forest to the existing state highway system. Unneeded and poorly constructed forest roads are one of the biggest threats to forest health in the United States. American Forests is working with Conservation Northwest and its LeClerc Road Revegetation project to plant a variety of vegetation along the Middle Branch LeClerc Creek Road in Colville National Forest. This planting will focus on native conifers like Douglas-fir and ponderosa pine, as well as shrubs and grasses that will be planted along a 2.6-mile section of old roadbed. This project will not only improve tree growth along the forest road, but will also improve habitat for wildlife, including grizzly bear, woodland caribou and bull trout.
