Again in 2002 that area w… Read More Year Planted: 2009 In 1988, the Brewer Fire burned 58,000 acres on the Custer National Forest. 57% of the forested landscape experienced a high intensity wildfire. Again in 2002 that area was hit by a fire, Kraft Springs fire that burned 65,551 acres. With this fire 55% of the landscape in this fire experienced a high intensity burn, meaning the area lacks a adequate seed source to natural regenerate. By planting over 560,000 seedlings the Custer National Forest will speed up the recovery of the forest habitat that would otherwise take decades. This planting will increase the habitat for elk, mule deer, whitetail deer, and goshawk.
