After the large fires of 2000, the Kootenai National Forest experienced a significant increase in Douglas-fir beetle, not only within fire areas but across the forest. This epidemic is on-going and continues to kill Douglas-fir trees. Planting ponderosa pine in place of the dying Douglas-fir will restore a species that was once dominant on this site. The Forest Service partnered with American Forests to plant 5,040 ponderosa pine across 48 acres. Ponderosa pine is historically a dominant species on this site, is more resilient to drought and disease and is favored by wildlife as habitat in the region.
