The Ouachita National Forest will plant close to 700,000 shortleaf pines on recently acquired lands that were deforested. There is already natural hardwoods including oak, hickory and other important wildlife species, so by planting shortleaf pine the National Forest will create a natural ecosystem of a pine-hardwood forest. The planting of native species will aid in watershed restoration and erosion control.
