Jefferson Parish Katrina ReLeaf Project

Year Planted: 2007

Trees Planted: 525
Location: Louisiana

Friends of Jefferson the Beautiful planted 525 trees in 2007 to restore the urban forest canopy destroyed by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Trees were planted throughout the Jefferson Parish on public property, including street medians and parks, by the Jefferson Parish Parkways Department. Additionally, as a reminder of the storms a grove of 100 bald cypress trees were planted by 4-H members and dedicated as an ‘American Forest’. All of the trees are a valuable contribution to the communities of the Jefferson Parish. While the project has not restored the tree canopy to pre-storm conditions, it has contributed substantially to the growth of a new urban canopy and the sense of well being for the community.
