Combined with the actions of homesteaders, this a… Read More Year Planted: 1991 In the 1800′s in Jarido Canyon, located Southwest of Cuba, New Mexico, thousands of cattle and sheep grazed and roamed. Combined with the actions of homesteaders, this activity altered the landscape. The ponderosa pine trees and grasslands that once created the ecosystem were replaced by sagebrush. Additionally, the soil decreased in nutritional value. American Forests partnered with the Bureau of Land Management, Tree New Mexico and Livestock Outgrowers Association to plant 2,500 trees. This project will repair and restore the plant and animal communities associated with Southwest forest ecosystems.
