The Grizzly Late Successional Reserve, destroyed in the Hunter Fire, is home to northern spotted owl. The Black Butte Watershed is locally vital and provides habitat for north coast steelhead and coho salmon. It is also spawning and rearing habitat for winter-run steelhead and fall-run chinook. Because of the lack of adjacent seed sources, without planting help this area could not regenerate these native species.
