Hunter Fire Restoration Project

Year Planted: 2007

Trees Planted: 18,975
Location: California

American Forests will partner with Mendocino National Forest to plant 12,000 Douglas-fir, ponderosa and sugar pine seedlings to increase seed source and discourage the domination of brush species in two critical habitat areas of the national forest. The Grizzly Late Successional Reserve, destroyed in the Hunter Fire, is home to northern spotted owl. The Black Butte Watershed is locally vital and provides habitat for north coast steelhead and coho salmon. It is also spawning and rearing habitat for winter-run steelhead and fall-run chinook. Because of the lack of adjacent seed sources, without planting help this area could not regenerate these native species.
