The project will establish a riparian corridor along the Gunpowder River, which eventually flows into the Chesapeake Bay. The site was previously farmed for row crops, such as corn and soybeans. 5,082 trees were machine planted in early spring 1999. The trees will connect the reservoir forest lands to the state park, increasing habitat for wildlife. The site also will be used as a demonstration project to evaluate the alternate uses of tree shelters and deer repellent tablets for the protection of seedlings from overbrowsing by deer, a common and persistent problem in the region. It will also be used as an outdoor classroom by Baltimore County public school teachers and natural resource based cooperative extension tours. The project partners are the Gunpowder Valley Watershed Association and the Maryland DNR.
