The highway is historic because it follows Native Ameri… Read More Year Planted: 2008 The Gunflint corridor is a State of Minnesota scenic byway that bisects the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The highway is historic because it follows Native American Footpaths that are centuries old and now serves a significant portion of Cook County residents and businesses. Not only was there a windstorm in 1999 that caused a 1000 square mile blowdown but also the Ham Lake Fire in 2007 burned the area increasing the mortality rate. The Superior National Forest is partnering with American Forests to plant over 180,000 trees.
