About the Granite Fire ReLeaf Project:

American Forests and the U.S. Forest Service are reforesting 129 acres of Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests with western larch and Douglas-fir to restore ecosystems damaged by the Granite Fire.

Global ReLeaf provides forests like this — and the communities that depend on them — with the restoration they need to thrive. Since 1990, American Forests has brought ReLeaf to forests in all 50 states and 44 countries, planting more than 45 million trees in the process.

ReLeaf Location:

Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests, ID

Key ReLeaf Activities:

  • Planting 37,500 trees across 129 acres
  • Restoring an ecosystem damaged by wildfire

Why This ReLeaf Project?

Started by lightning, the Granite Fire burned approximately 340 acres in summer 2011. Post-fire examination indicates that the affected acres are under-stocked. The reforestation plan calls for a fall planting at a spacing of 12 feet by 12 feet, using six-inch container-grown western larch and Douglas-fir seedlings. Approximately 300 trees per acre will be planted across the project area.

Planting will commence after sufficient fall rainfall, ensuring good seedling survival. Spacing will vary across the site to decrease mortality and protect the trees from snow, sun, and trampling and browsing by big game.
