Francis Marion National Forest #3

Year Planted: 1994

Trees Planted: 60,000
Location: South Carolina

In 1994 the Forest Service planted 60,000 longleaf pine seedlings on 100 acres in the Francis Marion National Forest. In 1989 Hurricane Hugo devastated most of the 250,000 acre forest. Additionally, the longleaf pine ecosystem has been declining for several centuries, although it once covered much of the coastal areas from Virginia to Texas. This ecosystem is also very diverse. This project will help restore the longleaf pine ecosystem of the forest and will create habitat for threatened and endangered species such as the red-cockaded woodpecker and American chafseed.
