This project will convert highly erodible farmland into a high-density hardwood forest to protect and enhance the Lower Wisconsin Riverway in southwestern Wisconsin. The waterway is home to numerous threatened and endangered species including ornate box turtles, red-shouldered hawks, osprey, and 19 fish. A total of 50,000 native red and white oak, black walnut and black cherry seedlings were planted by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources with support from American Forests and the Hardwood Forestry Fund. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will manage the planting for forest products, recreation and wildlife habitat.
