Unfortunately, the construction of an air shaft caused millions of tons of soil to be deposited into the valley along Horton Brook. To combat this problem, in the fall of 2008 Trout Unlimited and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection will remove approximately 16,000 cubic yards of fill from the floodplain and will plant 1,700 trees and shrubs on the stream bank, floodplain, and upland slopes. This project will improve water quality, reduce sediment runoff and erosion, stabilize the banks, and provide shade to maintain the cold water that the trout depend on.
