Name of Project: Dowknot Kirtland’s Warbler Habitat Planting

Location: Hiawatha National Forest, MI

Number of Trees Planted: 207,000

American Forests is partnering with the U.S. Forest Service in Hiawatha National Forest in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to restore jack pine trees that house the endangered Kirtland’s warbler. This small bird was nearly extinct just 50 years ago, but is now on its way to recovery due to projects like this one. This wildlife habitat improvement project will plant 207,000 jack pine trees to provide shelter and breeding grounds for the warbler. This planting will cover a total of 261 acres in the Sault Ste. Marie District of Hiawatha National Forest.
