Hiawatha National Forest, also known as the Great Lakes National Forest, is home to a variety of northern hardwoods, jack pines and other conifers. This national forest in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has recently seen a significant defoliation of red pines due to the Jack pine budworm. American Forests is partnering with the U.S. Forest Service to restore 23,000 red pine trees in the Munising District of Hiawatha National Forest. This planting will restore the area to a fully stocked stand, maintaining forest cover and habitat connectivity for a variety of species, including American marten, gray wolf and pileated woodpecker.
