This project was part of a three-year bottomland hardwood restoration plan written by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. The entire plan covers 500 acres, but a number of acres were set aside for reforestation by community volunteers to encourage public involvement. The University of North Texas Institute of Applied Sciences coordinated the volunteer outreach, planting and monitoring efforts. Benefits of this project include increased food and shelter for wildlife in bottomland floodplain area and community involvement in habitat restoration. Additional assistance for the project was provided by the City of Denton and National Tree Trust.
