The City of Atlanta’s Hartsfield International Airport owns the 10,130 acre Dawson Demonstration Forest, where the Etowah River, Amicalola River and Shoal Creek converge. It is managed by the Georgia Forestry Commission, with current uses including soil and water protection, wildlife management, timber management, educational opportunity for landowners and students, horseback riding, hiking and other recreational uses. The Georgia Forestry Commission planted 44,000 improved loblolly pine and shortleaf pine on 93 acres subjected to a southern pine beetle infestation and tornado damage. Site preparation will include the clearing of dead and down timber with a tractor and some suppression of weeds with herbicide on the ridge tops and slopes. This regeneration scheme should replace the stand with a species mixture similar to that before the damage wrought by wind and insects.
