But heavy … Read More Year Planted: 2007 Red spruce and spruce/hardwood forests once blanketed western Maryland’s mountain valleys, creating cool microclimates and lush habitat for animals and plants. But heavy logging changed all that, removing 99 percent of the forest. More than 100 years later, this broad landscape and its core areas are still struggling to recover. Trying to jump-start the restoration, American Forests partnered with The Nature Conservancy to reforest 250 acres of Cranesville Swamp over five years. In the fifth year of the partnership, 3,000 red spruce trees were planted. These trees will provide habitat for state-listed rare, threatened and endangered species.
