Cossatot River State Park Natural Area I

The Cossatot River State Park and Natural Area (CRSPNA) will be managed to protect and enhance the primitive, natural and aesthetic character of the area including the naturally occurring hardwood forests, as well as threatened habitats of game and non-game species. The site, originally a commercial pine plantation owned by the Weyerhauser Company, was purchased by the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission and is managed by Arkansas State Parks. The state park is home to the Cossatot River, recently designated as a wild and scenic river. Over 6,000 improved shortleaf pine and mixed oaks were planted in spring of 1993 with the help of local volunteers. The major benefits provided were improved aesthetic quality of the park, improved management of watershed protection activities, improved bio-diversity, aid in soil and water conservation and improved potential of educational and interpretive programs.
