The site chosen for planting is located in the Jepi Valley and is particularly susceptible to soil erosion and deforestation. Heavy rains in July 1997 aggravated the conditions of the slope and made tree planting even more necessary. Local infrastructure suffered as well, leading to a lack of resources. The Ecologist Youth of Romania, in partnership with two local NGOs, the Forestry Research Institute and the Romanian Environmental Centre, under the slogan ‘Global ReLeaf-By Ourselves!’ About 100 volunteers participated, demonstrating a significantly high level of public interest; even visitors to the area gladly lent a hand. Tree planting in Busteni has had both a landscape improvement value and a socio-educational value, instilling in the local community a sense of the value of the environment and the importance of being involved.
