Chesapeake Bay Riparian #2

Year Planted: 2000

Trees Planted: 114,775
Location: Maryland

2000 was the second year that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service provided free hardwood seedlings to private landowners for the planting of forest riparian buffers on forested uplands and wetlands. This year the plantings took place in Maryland and Delaware on 323 acres. This project will protect the streambank from erosion, reduce flooding, decrease the amount of pollutants that reach the Chesapeake Bay and provide habitat for resident and migratory species in the Bay watershed. The riparian buffer will piece together habitat gaps along streams, which provides travel corridors for terrestrial wildlife. This project also involved the cooperation of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
