Trees Planted: 4,800
Location: New Mexico

In 1994 on the Carson National Forest in northern New Mexico, the Questa Ranger District planted 4,800 containerized ponderosa pine on recently acquired lands. The previous owners had removed most of the tall tree species for dry land farming. This project hoped to re-establish at least 60 percent of the tree cover to improve wildlife habitat and to provide an example for reforestation in areas where cropland clearing has occurred. Artificial bio-degradable shade protection was also used in this planting to promote tree survival. Unfortunately, in May 1996 the District suffered a catastrophic fire that covered approximately 8,000 acres. This fire consumed the Global ReLeaf project area and destroyed the trees.
