Trees Planted: 1,000
Location: Puerto Rico

The Carite water reservoir is located on the Rio de La Plata, which is the longest river on the island of Puerto Rico. The reservoir serves the town of Cayey and feeds the reservoir in Cidra. This area was damaged by road construction, fires, overgrazing and hurricanes. In the spring of 1998, 1,000 native hardwood species were planted. This project will reestablish native species that will provide food and shelter for birds, including the endangered Puerto Rican plains pigeon. The reforestation of this area will also reduce soil erosion on steep slopes, improve the natural filtration system, restore a valuable forest ecosystem and create social concern for watershed conservation. The trees were planted by Boy Scouts, students and community volunteers.
