Burn Canyon Fire Reforestation

Year Planted: 2009

Trees Planted: 153,000
Location: Colorado

The Burn Canyon wildfire happened in 2002, it burned 33,000 acres and is the largest naturally-ignited fire in Colorado history. This will be the sixth year of planting in the 11,400 acre National Forest portion of the burn area. A group of interested citizens, assisted by Colorado State University, is engaged in community-based monitoring of burn recovery. The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forest will hand-plant over 150,000 seedlings grown from locally-collected, genetically-adapted seed which will shorten the length of the forest reestablishment period from two hundred years under natural conditions to about ten years.
