Bugaboo Reforestation
Year Planted: 2009
Trees Planted: 630,000
Location: Florida
On May 5, 2007, a lightning strike near Bugaboo Island within the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge started a blaze that, under extreme drought conditions accompanied by high winds, developed into a major wildfire encompassing over 306,000 acres in Georgia and Florida. In partnership with American Forests the Osceola National Forest will plant over 300,000 longleaf pine seedlings that will restore this native species to the area and also create habitat for the gopher tortoise which is a sensitive species.
